Kids Apparel Market in India

Since many decades, the Indian kidswear & apparel market is being dominated by unorganised and local players and probably that is the reason of it being remained largely untapped. However, with the onset of the internet that resulted in the popularity of e-commerce portals and awareness amongst kids as well as their parents about new fashion and trends, the industry is now witnessing a boom. 

In the last few years, lots of global brands have ventured into this segment and as per reports, the kidswear apparel industry is expected to touch Rs 1,600 billion by 2021, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 12 percent between 2016-21. 

Reasons for the Significant Growth in Kids Wear Market: 

  • Growth in the Economy: The economy of India has been witnessing continuous growth, which resulted in increasing disposable income too. The increase in the spending capability of parents has led to the fulfillment of their kids' wants. 
  • Changing Lifestyles of Parents: The influence of cosmopolitan culture has led to a change in the parent's mindset as now their child's fashion reflects their status and standards. Twinning their kids' clothing with themselves and posting pictures on media has become the new trend. 


  • Kids' the Decision-Makers ​: Earlier, only the parents were the decision-makers for their kid's apparel. But, because of the increasing encouragement about self-confidence and independence among kids at a young age, the kids now choose their clothes and accessories themselves.   • Increasing Preference for Branded Apparel: Earlier, branded clothes or fancy clothes were only bought on special occasions like Birthdays, Diwali, Raksha-Bandhan, etc. But now, even the night wears and undergarments are branded. 
  • Change in Fashion Sense: Simple clothing like T-shirts, shirts, jeans were a part of the kids' section but now it has gone far to palazzos, high-waisted pants, off-shoulder tops, cold-shoulder tops and much more.
